The Mind is a set of cognitive abilities, or faculties, including consciousness, perception, thinking, judgment, and memory. Modern Psychological and Psychiatric views of the Mind center around physicalism (the idea that the real world consists simply of the physical world) and functionalism (the theory that mental states can be defined by their physical cause, their effect on other mental states, and their effect on behavior). In simpler terms these disciplines believe that the mind is roughly identical with the brain and reducible to physical phenomena such as neuronal activity or biochemical imbalances.
How the Mind works is the subject of considerable scientific research, almost all of which is centered on the brain, its biology, electrical activity, and how consciousness is affected by drugs. Most recently Quantum Physicists have found it necessary to examine the nature of consciousness as well. Their findings are the subject of another article on this site. Medical Psychiatrists typically treat patients with a combination of psychiatric medication and psychotherapy, “talk therapy”, hypnosis, or by electrical or magnetic stimulation of various sorts.
Psychology is the science of behavior and the mind, embracing all aspects of conscious and unconscious experience as well as thought. Psychologists rely on observation, self report, and statistically examine how various mental traits and abilities interrelate. Psychologists employ many forms (roughly 80 at this time) of psychotherapy, including hypnosis, to assist with emotional problems.
Psychology relies on what are know as inferential statistics. Inferential statistics cannot determine causation, only the degree of relationship of two things. Being born with a right and left arm are almost 100% correlated, but being born with a right arm does not cause having a left arm. Having two arms are part of a larger mystery, thought to be genetic in origin, like having a brain.
The whole problem of how two cells can develop into a fetus and then a full living being is far from understood. The mystery of the Mind is as complex, and genetics has no thoughts or answers. Genes contain information about how to form the proteins that make up the body – the building blocks of the body. Nowhere in the genetic code has anyone found anything about the architecture of the body, why humans have arm and legs, why we all have stomachs, livers, brains and other parts in common. Nowhere is there any hint of how the Mind works or what it is made of. Where are the instructions?
Psychologists study the Mind, and work with emotional upsets. Psychology is dominated by Behaviorism, which emphasizes the role of environmental factors in influencing behavior, to the near exclusion of innate or inherited factors. This amounts essentially to a focus on learning. We learn new behavior during life through classical or operant conditioning (collectively known as ‘learning theory’). When born our mind is seen as ‘tabula rasa’ (a blank slate).
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is currently the most popular form of Psychological therapy. CBT is based on the belief that thought distortions and maladaptive behaviors are key to the development and maintenance of psychological disorders; that symptoms and associated distress can be reduced by teaching new information-processing skills and coping mechanisms, training the person to use different words.
Emotions are experienced and not observable or measurable. The results of emotions are thoughts and behaviors. These are observable. This is what Psychologists and Psychiatrists focus on. The problem is, since emotions internal experiences that are not shared or measurable, the words used to describe emotions are imprecise. What one person describes as “sadness and loneliness” another describes as “agony”. The words are not the key, the experience is. It is the experience that drives us. Changing the words does not change the experience. Changing the experience is the key to changing us, and our feeling better.
Both Psychiatry and Psychology believe in the biological nature of the mind, and are part of Science’s attempt to understand the universe. As outgrowths of Science, Psychiatry and Psychology suffer from the same limitations. When first begun the founders of Science believed that in order to separate fact from superstition it was necessary to follow the philosophic concept of “positivism”, or the idea that if something is real it can be measured. At that time it was believed that man could measure, or figure out how to measure, anything that truly existed. The overconfidence of that position was recognized in the last 30 years when we discovered that we are capable of measuring only 5% of what exists in the universe (Trimble. V, 1987 “Existence and the nature of dark matter in the universe”). The Mind is just one of the things science cannot measure or locate.
This does not mean that science is wrong, but it does indicate that the scientific method is inherently incapable of understanding the universe. How can you find the real “cause” of things when almost all of the universe and it’s energies are beyond your ability to measure, study, or directly manipulate? The task has been likened to a group of blindfolded men trying to understand an elephant by only having a elephant’s foot to examine. Understanding the Mind requires different tools and methods than those currently available to science.
In contrast to Psychiatry and Psychology, the Attractor Field Techniques (AFT) views the Mind as an infinitely complex inherited energetic processor of internal and external data. Like a computer it can run any software loaded into it. All Minds have the same basic computer, differing only in the largely inherited software available to process information. The brain is seen as being much like a radio receiver that reacts to energies outside itself. Trying to find consciousness in the brain is a silly as looking for the announcer inside your radio.
AFT sees the energetic processes of the Mind as having evolved across time. These energetic processes do not require any conscious or willful activity to take place. The inherited structure of the Mind and our inherited karmic energies take care of that. Our research indicates that alignment with thought forms begins early in life with inherited mood states that are passed on to us by our parents along with their DNA. This view was first proposed by the French biologist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, an early opponent Darwin’s idea that biological evolution occurred and proceeded in accordance with the natural laws of genetics. The rejection of Lamarck’s ideas and adoption of Darwin’s has shaped the Psychiatric and Psychological sciences into what they are today.
AFT sees the inherited mood states (temperament) as the initial “lens” through which our awareness is focused. Later interaction with the material world solidifies the window through which we individually perceive and experience the world. AFT sees our emotions as the primary driver of perceptions and experience of life. Remember, emotions are experienced and not observable.
Various events encountered during one’s life can and do cause “perturbations”, or energetic emotional disturbances that persist and influence our perceptions and reactions. In AFT these energies are designated as “Attractors” because of their influence on consciousness. Removing these emotional disturbances is the primary task of AFT. Grief, Depression, and PTSD are seen as clear examples of energetic disturbances that persist across time, sometimes an entire lifetime.
AFT treats and changes the Mind by stimulating the same energy points used by acupuncturists. The research of Charles Shang, M.D. indicates that acupuncture points are portals into the underlying energy system responsible for our Mind and Body (See: “Electrophysiology of growth control and acupuncture” Life Sci. 2001 Feb 9;68(12):1333-42).
While there are numerous ways of stimulating Acupuncture points, I have found the most effective method is using the energetic fields produced by loudspeakers. Using highly specific tones individual Acupuncture points can be stimulated more rapidly that with any other method I have encountered. Played in specific sequences the tones can reset the Mind and undo energetic perturbations.
