This article provides an overview of AFT, where it fits among therapies, and why it works. It is a long story, and you may simply want to get rid of your bad feelings. Like all psychologists I was taught and believed that the Mind was somehow created in the complex matrix of the brain’s neurology. It was a mystery yet to be solved. Then I read an article in Science by John Lewin that blew my Mind – and all of my preconceptions about the Mind. It started the journey that led to the Attractor Field Techniques (AFT). Believe me, AFT is not like anything else you have ever encountered.
In December of 1980 Lewin reported the findings of another British neurologist (John Lorber) conclusively demonstrating that the amount of brain tissue someone has is not related to how intelligent they are. This was startling since it was the exact reverse of the orthodox view I was taught. Everyone knew that man’s larger and more complex brain is why man sleeps in a bed, and animals sleep in the woods, yard or barn. Lorber showed CAT-Scan images of an Oxford University math genius who had almost no brain. Actually the man had about as much brain tissue as the average cat.
I thought that Lewin’s article would revolutionize Psychological and Psychiatric thinking. I was wrong. It was largely ignored and dismissed as impossible. Psychologists know that the Mind and brain are one in the same thing, and that Lewin must be mistaken. As is the case in Medicine and Psychiatry if something cannot be explained it is ignored, or ridiculed as preposterous.
Lorber’s findings indicated that we need to consider the possibility that memory, and the Mind itself is of a form as yet unknown to science; or, maybe, that the Mind and it’s memories are outside the body—extracorporeal. Lorber may have uncovered the evidence that Mind-Body dualism is real.
It has taken years, but advances in the field of Physics have led Quantum Physicists to now agree. The Mind and brain are different things. The Mind uses the brain to interface with the physical world we live in. The action of the Mind may even create the world we live in. At the very least your Mind creates and dominates your reality.
The results of nearly 40 years of my private research have culminated in a new method of dealing with the Mind and its problems. It is an energetic method that targets the energetic source of the emotions that drive us. Psychology and Psychiatry still believe that everything that is important is in the brain, and that consciousness can be changed with the right drugs, coaching, and training. It is simple, you can take a pill and/or learn how to view yourself differently and feel differently about yourself and life.
I see the Mind differently, and most university based academicians and traditional practitioners run from my research. This includes a famous “Animal Lab” who conducted an “Mouse study” on the effectiveness on the AFT technique applied to pain reduction. They ran because they were mystified. In their terms, they did not understand the “method of action”, or how it worked. How or why did the animals respond differently? In their world it was impossible. It must be a mistake, no matter how many times the data shows the same thing, it must be wrong. That it did work was seen as an inconvenient detail. Everyone knows how the world works. Their mindset could not be overcome by the data they themselves had collected.
The Philosopher Plato in 517 B.C. foresaw this problem and result. In his famous “Allegory of the cave” Plato claimed that knowledge gained through the senses is no more than opinion and that, in order to have real knowledge, we must gain it through reasoning. In the allegory Plato distinguished between people who mistake sensory knowledge for the truth and people who really do see the truth. The story goes like this:
Imagine a cave, in which there are several prisoners. The prisoners are chained to rocks, their arms and legs are bound and their head is tied so that they can see only the stone wall in front of them. These prisoners have been here since birth and have never seen outside of the cave. Can only see the wall in front of them; and, shadows of the outside world projected on to it. Having never seen the real objects ever before, they would believe that the shadows of objects were “real”.
Eventually, one of the prisoners breaks free of his bindings and leaves the cave. He is shocked at the world he discovers outside the cave and does not believe it can be real. After awhile he becomes used to his new surroundings and he realizes that his former view of reality was wrong. Wanting to share his knowledge with his former cave mates he returns to the cave. Rather than welcoming his insights, the prisoners, according to Plato, would infer from the returning man’s statements that the journey out of the cave had harmed him and that they should not undertake a similar journey. Plato concludes that the prisoners, if they were able, would reach out and kill him. They would kill anyone who attempted to drag them out of the cave.
Science was founded hundreds of years ago on the belief that it could measure everything of importance; that the material universe we experience is all that exists. We now know that this is untrue. We can only measure about 5% of all that exists in the universe. Somehow my colleagues have not recognized the simple reality of their own findings. Our models of medicine, psychiatry, and psychology are “creatures of the cave”, perspectives built on an illusion. The most recent findings of Quantum Physics suggest that the universe we experience arises in the context of the Minds energies – emotional energies.
So what is so different about AFT? First, there are no drugs or other methods used to influence the brain as with Psychiatry. There is no electro shock, Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TSM), or more invasive methods. There is no coaching, convincing or practice necessary as in Psychology and meditation. There is no evangelical preaching, or “pep talks” as is found with coaches. There is no attempt to convince you of anything. What is there? Listening, remembering and changing.
AFT uses an energetic field created by audio speakers to stimulate the body’s underlying energy system and directly influences the energy of the Mind. This is AFT’s method of action, and it is as safe as listening to music on your radio. You do what your Mind does and AFT energetically makes the negative thoughts less attractive, and they don’t spread or propagate. Sounds weird? No more than changing a channel on your car radio.
The brain reacts to the emotional thought energy of the Mind and in so doing links the Mind and the body. Emotional thoughts can be good for us or bad for us. They create particular disturbances (perturbations) in the energy field of our being. These disturbances cause us emotional upsets and can inadvertently impact the body’s energy system and lead to illness. Medically this is called the “stress reaction”.
Stress was first recognized as important by Hans Selye, a Hungarian-Canadian endocrinologist. Selye called the process the “general adaption syndrome” and suggested that stress induced physiological responses precede through the stages of alarm, resistance, and exhaustion, leading to illness. At one point Selye thought there was no discernable cause for stress, since what makes one man cry makes another man laugh. What he missed, of course, was that the emotion was the cause.
